Artificial nutrition secures survival in case of insufficient food intake. In contrast to the need for adequate hydration, the supply of nutrients is not mandatory on a daily basis and can be discontinued or reduced for a considerable period of time. However, nutrient deficiencies iften ensue and subsequent problems in daily practice arise. This article addresses the correct indications, the side effects, and the limitations of artificial nutrition. It shows that artificial nutrition does not always meet expectations particularly with respect to quality of life and survival rate. Its implementation therefore requires careful consideration.
