Alternative Medizin in einem wettbewerblichen Gesundheitswesen. Diskussionsanstöße aus Sicht einer gesetzlichen Krankenkasse
The paper discusses the application of alternative medicine from the perspective of the statutory health insurance. The fact that more and more patients turn to alternative medicine is a sign of growing patient autonomy and suspicion against orthodox medicine. A modern (statutory) health insurance must cater for individual demands not requirements defined by the authorities. It is doubtful that a pluralistic society will accept that authorities define what counts as »orthodox« and »alternative« medicine. Instead it calls for a competitive, user-oriented health system, which, ideally, is able to create highly efficient structures and thus meet the demands of insurance members according to their individual sense of sickness and health and at acceptable costs. Thus the strengthening of individual patient autonomy is of crucial importance.
