Old age dementia has been with us longer than the hundred years since Alois Alzheimers discoveries, as is evident from the history of the term. Since the times of antiquity medicine has been developing theories about the origin of dementia and other old age afflictions and how they could be treated based on clinical examinations and against the background of various conceptualizations of old age (including deficit, abundance and environmental models), and even in the face of idealistic counter currents. A comprehensive theory of »the illness old age« which explicated both mental and physical degeneration dominated for a short period in the eighteenth century. It was not until around 1900, however, that brain pathology provided the basis for our modern, biological understanding of this phenomenon.
