Auf dem Weg zum »gläsernen« Patienten? Die ärztliche Schweigepflicht in den Zeiten elektronischer Datenverarbeitung
Confidentiality is one of the oldest obligations of the medical profession. However, the advent of electronic patient records has significantly changed the environment in which that obligation must be discharged. The increasing availability of patient data creates new possibilities for abuse and poses an increasing threat to the confidentiality of sensitive patient data. As the computer and telecommunications technologies also have the potential to improve the quality of care, it does not seem justified to abandon the electronic processing of patient data completely. Rather, technical and policy provisions should be developed to protect the confidentiality of the processed patient data, while allowing an efficient access to the information for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes.
