»Eine höchst wohlthätige Bereicherung unserer Kunst« Plastische Chirurgie in medizinhistorischer Perspektive
From early modern times plastic surgery (term coined in 1838) developed from the art to replace or reconstruct lost or injured noses. With the development of medicine as a science the pace of technological innovation increased. The »industrial« wars of recent history, especially the First World War, are commonly held to have acted as catalyst for medical innovations. However, this notion of progress not factually wrong but historically problematic, has to be differentiated. From the perspective of cultural history plastic surgery is but one factor in a complex interaction between individual and collective ideals of a healthy and beautiful body. Plastic surgery provides the means to meet the demand in society created by those ideals.
