Schmerz und Leid als Dimension des menschlichen Selbstverhältnisses. Philosophische und theologische Aspekte
The approach towards pain and suffering taken by medical therapy is highly dependent upon the manner in which these phenomena are interpreted. Such an interpretation must be developed on the one hand against a background of socially accepted and individual attitudes, and on the other, through reference to a systematic concept of personhood. The purely medical perspective afforded by the lex artis must be expanded to enable doctors to act upon a more comprehensive understanding of the reflexive nature of the human person. Both philosophical and theological traditions offer comprehensive interpretative horizons which, however, cannot simply be superimposed on the medical perspective. Rather, enjoined in a reciprocal relationship with a medical perspective these horizons must be made to benefit the self-understanding of medicine, as well as sound, responsible action.
