Wie weit reicht die Verantwortung des Arztes? Von den Möglichkeiten und Grenzen der Freiheit in komplexen Systemen
Holding someone responsible for an incident or damage caused requires taking into account the circumstances of the occasion. The philosophical and theological tradition has therefore developed rules for the adequate apportioning of guilt. Adherence to these rules can prevent both a premature acquittal and an exaggerated verdict of guilty. However, the traditional thinking on responsibility must be broadened. The complex social, scientific and technical contexts within which medicine is practised both reduce and increase the responsibility of the individuals involved. Moreover, a society that lacks a culture of forgiveness is setting up high hurdles for facing up without fear to ones responsibility and possible guilt.
