Medizinischer Fortschritt und die Krise der Ziele der Medizin
Medical progress is ambivalent. By itself it cannot solve the personal and socio-economic problems entailed by chronic diseases, greater longevity and a growing number of people requiring care. Rather, it heightens these problems. This paper demonstrates that the one-sided promotion of medical technology in the battle against diseases and the resulting cost explosion in the health system lead to a neglect of care which in turn threatens the human rights of incurably ill people. At the same time, certain new biomedical methods themselves question basic moral and legal convictions. The paper therefore suggests to meet this crisis by setting goals for medical progress that are truly aimed at the wellbeing of individuals and people at large.
