This paper explicates that distinction by applying Karl Rahners concept of a real symbol to the performative speech act. In such an act an utterance effects what is said (such as in the ruling of a judge). The irremovable difference between the utterance and the thought and even more between the thought and what lies beyond it (and even beyond the reach of the speaker) entices an ideological removal of the »symbolic darkness«. All three forms that removal may take: magical, spiritualist, or actualist, destroy freedom and humanity. In contrast, our bodily existence may be recognised as an invitation to dare to trust.
