By reflecting on the relationships between pain and stimulus and pain and fear the article approaches the problem of the relationship between pain and meaning. That pain and suffering are in themselves meaningless does not exclude that they may have a moral function. Can the meaningless of pain be interpreted to make sense? Here, religion comes into play. The (Christian) religion externalizes the meaning of life. What gives a life meaning comes from outside. Thus, faith enables us to accept an illness more readily. By establishing relationships it also comforts us. True healing in the biblical sense results from a persons living richly related.
