Der Tod der Konsulin Buddenbrook. Über das Sterben des eigenen Todes
Looking at the death of consul Buddenbrooks wife in the novel by Thomas Mann we consider the question how we are to deal with acute cases of pneunomia today. The way dying is displayed in literature at a time when antibiotic treatment was not yet available and shows up both changes and constants in the management of pneumonia: its high lethality, the usually advanced age of the patients, its prominence as a cause of death. From these literary and historical considerations we define goals for the treatment of pneumonia today. These include confronting the issues of dying and palliation as well as a deeper reflection on the self-interpretation of medicine.
