Doping, Sport und Menschenwürde
Doping is banned in competitive sports. Common arguments against doping are: doping contradicts the naturalness of sporting activities, doping damages health, and doping tilts the level playing field. Whilst the concept of the naturalness of sporting activities is inherently questionable, the argument based on health protection tends to be paternalistic though it may be justifiable. However, doping flatly contradicts the basic rule of competitive sports that all competitors should have the same chances. In order to prevent doping in competitive as well as in sports for leisure and fitness, and in addition to existing measures, guiding vision statements are needed. They should provide orientation and take into account the health argument. In 2007, the Olympic movement committed itself to respect for human dignity. Human dignity as a vision for sports includes both mutual respect and self-respect. Self-respect can be characterized as mental and physical balance and therefore contradicts self-harming actions.
