Patientenverfügungen und Advance Care Planning: Internationale Erfahrungen
In 2009, advance directives became legally binding in Germany. In light of international experiences especially in the US, however, it is questionable whether legally binding advance directives alone will be able to effectively protect patient autonomy at the end of life. Especially the experiences in the US show the limits of advance directives. It rather requires new approaches that integrate advance directives into a more comprehensive, regionally implemented communicative process of advance care planning (ACP). We report the successful implementation of ACP-programs in the US (Respecting Choices) and Australia (Respecting Patient Choices). Finally, we discuss which conclusions can be drawn from these international experiences.
