The problems raised in respect to a patients living will relate to life and death and concern to us all elementarily. The questions at issue deal with the fundamental orientation from which people shape their lives, the reliability of the warranted right of life and life protection and the desire for a humane death. The ethical legitimization of the patients living will is the right of self-determination or the patients autonomy. What is desirable, meaningful, problematically or even beneath human dignity when a persons life is ending? The theological ethics considers debating these questions by means of a patients living will as an absolutely meaningful act and a chance which one should use.
