Resilienz im ärztlichen Berufsalltag fördern
»Resilience« (from lat. resilire to jump back) is a materials capacity to »bounce back« after outer pressure, to react with resistance and flexibility without breaking or enduring deformation. Applied to the medical profession, resilience means an engaged, flexible coping with challenges that respects its own boundaries. Conversely, a lack of resilience is characterized by withdrawal, numbing, maintaining of a functioning and socially desired façade. Resilience may be individually trained and strengthened on the one hand and systemically and institutionally recognised and fostered, on the other. In daily professional practice, personal resilience needs a cooperative climate among colleagues where mindfulness and acknowledgement of boundaries are respected as strengthening resources. Interventions enhancing resilience aim at learning such capacities as well as at sustainable modification of attitudes. Doctors are rarely accustomed to acknowledge their own needs. This may be detrimental for their patients. Consequently, for acknowledging their needs, their colleagues acceptance is required and »permission from top to down«, i. e., from public accountability, responsible organizations, and institutional leaders.
