Ethische Legitimität der Beschneidung?
The controversial debate on circumcision of boys will be discussed from a perspective of Christian ethics. The arguments »pro« are brought forward by a theology of the covenant, with view to the rituals of affiliation to Judaism and Islam, and due to medical prevention for a lesser infection with germs and better hygiene. »Contra« arguments are discussed by an ethics of human rights in favor of the right of physical integrity, the right of self-determination, the right of religious freedom with the necessity of a deliberate and conscious approval by the one concerned. Also the possibility of traumata and constraints of sexual self-fulfillment as well as the medical benefits are controversial in the debate. Due to all arguments it is suggested to draw balanced conclusions, in which Judaism and Islam decide for themselves. Within Christian societies however the act of circumcision should be enlightened by considering the dignity of the human person in all its dimensions.
