Die Erlaubnis und Pflicht zu heilen im jüdischen Schrifttum. Eine philosophisch-historische Analyse nach Rabbi A. J. Kook
Classical Jewish sources provide a wealth of thought with a long and continuous tradition, which might be an important contribution to modern discussions in medical ethics. We reveal the literary development from the Bible to contemporary Jewish attitudes exemplified by the analysis of Rabbi A. Y. Kook (18651935). The permission and duty to heal was explained in different ways by the classical commentators of the Bible and the Talmud based on their biographical and historical background. Theological, financial, professional or religious-cultural aspects might explain the necessity for a »permission« to heal. In his innovative analysis, Kook combines these aspects, and he regards the body-soul-relationship as a major challenge to modern medicine in the 20th century.
