The article addresses the question of the specific nature of medical ethics. Its starting point is the thesis that it is not an extraordinary form of ethics but an ethics for acting in specific situations. Subsequently, essential features of the still influential ancient concept of medicine as both a practical and a technical science with its normative implications are developed. From this perspective, medicine is not an applied science but part of the humanities. Ethical reflection is an integral part of it. For the medical ethos the firm orientation towards the health of the individual as its final good is decisive. It gives direction to the judgement sharpened by experience.
