Autonomieverbesserung durch kognitives Neuro-Enhancement?
In the debate about neuro-enhancement (NE), suggestions have been made to enhance peoples autonomy through NE. This article shows that enhancements of single capacities that affect autonomy are conceivable. However, concluding that such enhancements will also mean an overall improvement of autonomy will only be possible within a narrow concept of autonomy, thereby excluding other important aspects for the analysis of such NE measures. If ethical analysis is based on this kind of conceptual reductionism, NE will usually be judged as desirable. This article provides a conceptual analysis through which the difficulties in applying cognitive NE for the improvement of autonomy will be revealed.
