End-of-life-processes in modern intensive care make it necessary to have in mind the option of organ donation in patients with severe cerebral damage timely. The detection and evaluation of possible organ donors therefore has to start before the diagnosis of brain death is definitely determined. This raises ethical and legal questions which are discussed controversially sometimes.
