Zu schön, um wahr zu sein? Plastisch-ästhetische Chirurgie als Herausforderung für die Medizinethik
Prefaced by an introduction into the increasingly popular phenomenon of plastic-aesthetic surgery and brief descriptions of select medical practices is a recommendation to divide the range of treatment options into five areas of action. The first line of argument analyses the ethics of aesthetic surgical practices by means of principlism while simultaneously questioning its efficiency. Resulting conclusions are put into relation with contemporary changes occurring in the practice of healthcare. The second argumentation delves into the field of anthropology by taking the human pursuit of self-improvement into account. An ethical evaluation of aesthetic surgery is carried out against this background, drawing attention to inherent potentialities and problems. Areas in which the leading paradigm of autonomy requires supplementation are pointed out.
